EMC loses nearly $1 billion in quarter

HOPKINTON – Data storage device maker EMC Corp. posted a loss of nearly $1 billion for the July through September quarter. The company plans to lay off 1,600 workers as a result, according to the Boston Globe. The layoffs will bring to 5,500 the number of job cuts at the company this year – about 22 percent of its workforce. About one-third of EMC’s employees work out of the Bay State, according to the paper. It was the worst quarter in the history of the company.
