PROVIDENCE – Providence has 15 new benches installed in the Fox Point neighborhood that are intended to foster more conversation.

Designed by a Johnson & Wales University student, the benches feature a curved seating area. They were installed along Wickenden Street, the main business street in the neighborhood.

The design was part of a class project led by Jonathan Harris, an associate professor in the JWU College of Engineering & Design, who asked his students to submit designs for benches and tree grates that could serve as conversation spaces. The class project was conducted in collaboration with Providence City Councilman Seth Yurdin, the Wickenden Area Merchants Association and the Fox Point Neighborhood Association.

Money for the benches came from federal Community Development Block Grant funds.
