PROVIDENCE – Gov. Lincoln Almond has ordered state agencies and departments to restrict spending in anticipation of reduced revenue resulting from the economic slump this fiscal year. As foundations of his executive order, Governor Almond directed key state managers to spend only what is essential, fill only those vacancies that demand filling and limit capital spending only to those projects authorized by the state budget officer.
“We must practice austerityin the daily operations of our state government,” Almond said. “That means every program and expenditure will have to be examined as we strive to maintain essential services and balance the state budget in the current economic downturn.”
