Gov. Donald L. Carcieri announced Thursday the appointment of Brig. Gen. Robert Thomas Bray as the adjutant general of the Rhode Island National Guard. Bray currently serves as deputy commanding general for the Army National Guard at the U.S. Army Field Artillery in Fort Sill, Okla.
Bray has more than 35 years of military and emergency management experience, Carcieri said during a State House press conference Thursday.

The adjutant general serves as the commanding general of the National Guard, the director of the Emergency Management Agency, and is the state’s liaison to the federal Department of Homeland Security. The annual salary of the adjutant general is $85,067.
Bray, of Sioux Falls, S.D., is a 35-year member of the South Dakota National Guard. He joined the South Dakota National Guard in 1971. In 2004, he was promoted to brigadier general.
Bray also served as fire division chief with the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Department, where he was responsible for incidents involving hazardous materials and special operations. He retired from the department after 27 years of service.
In his current position as deputy commanding general for the Army National Guard at the U.S. Army Field Center, Bray serves as the primary liaison between the National Guard and the U.S. Army at Fort Sill.
Bray was one of two finalists selected by a search committee that was named by Carcieri following Maj. Gen. Reginald Centracchio’s retirement last year. The search committee, headed by Rear Adm. (retired) Joseph Strasser, conducted a national search and reviewed 29 applications for the post.
Brig. Gen. John Enright was appointed as the interim adjutant general in April when Centracchio announced his intention to retire.
