PROVIDENCE – Johnson & Wales University announced Wednesday that it will have a phased restart of in-person classes with all culinary, baking and pastry lab classes beginning Oct. 18 and Oct. 19.

Close to two weeks ago, JWU moved all of its classes that have an in-person component, except for the noted labs, online after several COVID-19 cases were identified in students.

The university, at the request of the R.I. Department of Health, began testing all students Oct. 5, JWU said. While Tuesday’s results are still pending, JWU said that only five cases – two students who live on campus and three who were attending class remotely, all currently in isolation – were identified out of more than 2,400 tests conducted by the university.

JWU also anticipates all other classes will resume face-to-face components on Oct. 20. The university will also continue Oct. 20 random testing of students, faculty and staff on a regular basis.
