FALL RIVER – Mass. Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray and Mass. Rep. Michael Rodrigues, D-Westport, visited MicroMagnetics on Oct. 28, The Herald News reported.
MicroMagnetics, a magnetic sensor producer based in the Fall River Industrial Park, was founded in 2002 as a startup in the Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center on Martine Street run by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

Gang Xiao, chairman of MicroMagnetics, said he chose Massachusetts over Rhode Island, where he works as a professor at Brown University, because of the help he got from the ATMC, a state-run incubator.
“It was very, very attractive,” said Xiao, according to The Herald News, while giving Murray and Rodrigues a tour of the company’s headquarters. “Rhode Island doesn’t have that.”
MicroMagnetics has received three federal stimulus awards: $500,000 from the National Science Foundation, $300,000 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for an undetermined amount.
MicroMagnetics plans to expand its work force from eight employees to between 15 and 20 people within two years. It hopes to produce 100,000 sensors for smart phones by next year and 1 million in the following year.
