PORTSMOUTH, RI, November 7, 2013 – Pirate Cove Marina, a third-generation family-owned full service marina on the western shore of the Sakonnet River, has expanded across the harbor into Tiverton. They recently opened a new branch on Riverside Drive in the former Quality Yacht Services (QYS) location, offering a full-service marina.

“Our team is excited about the opportunity to service and store boats at our new location. Through cooperative efforts with the QYS management team, we were able to retain approximately 70% of their clients. We are also excited to offer this location to our current boaters who prefer to be on this side of the Sakonnet River,” said Brandon Kidd, Pirate Cove Marina owner and manager.
Former QYS customer and long-time boater Jack Ellis has seen a lot of marinas in his life. He’d been looking for a home for Independence, his Sabre powerboat and says he’s thrilled to have Pirate Cove taking over.
“The first time I met Brandon I found him extremely professional, very accommodating and very business-like and decided that’s where I wanted to keep my boat, on the Portsmouth side. Later he called and said they’d taken over operation of the Quality yard in Tiverton and they could accommodate me there. I was really pleased then, because I live right up the hill,” Ellis explained. “It’s also great news for the town that we have another business opening after one closed. And I’m pleased that a professional like Brandon has taken it over, rather than just some unknown person walking in and running it.”
With a 40-ton Travel-lift, the Tiverton facility will offer all the services of their Portsmouth location, from hauling and storage to varnish and repairs. The additional indoor facility, harborside dock and property will allow them to expand their scope of services and accommodate larger vessels for indoor storage.
Pirate Cove has engaged former QYS yard manager Steven Perry and others to help ensure a seamless transition, and phone lines have already been forwarded for continuity.
“We’re committed to building long term relationships with our new clients and strengthening those we’ve worked hard to create. Steven’s skill set and rapport with his clients will smooth the transition for everyone involved. I’ve known Steven a long time and we are all excited to have him aboard at Pirate Cove,” Kidd said.
The Tiverton location has room for 50 boats in outdoor storage and six to eight large vessels indoor. This expansion also enables Pirate Cove Marina to hire a few more people and contribute to the local economy. Kidd is looking forward to the synergy created by Tiverton’s surrounding boat-related businesses and community organizations.
“The Tiverton facility will open many doors for us, including building a relationship with the marine trades program at the local high school. And in a way, Pirate Cove Marina is getting back to its roots. Our founder, my grandfather Thomas W. Kidd, owned this property years ago where he ran a marine services facility. We expect to continue his tradition of high quality work,” Kidd commented.
Plans are already underway to repair a portion of the dock and pilings, as well as move the Pirate Cove Yacht Sales office to the Tiverton site. A full list of services can be found online at piratecovemarina.net.
