Golf -centered development under way
SEEKONK – An 18-hole golf course, a two-tiered driving range and practice facility, and a 36-hole miniature golf course are being developed on land next to the Showcase Cinemas off Fall River Avenue on the site of a former gravel bank. The project being developed by Seekonk Golf Center LLC is being financed by Clubhouse Capital, a Providence based golf course finance and advisory firm. Benny Park, a Rhode Island golf course operator is the majority principal in Seekonk Golf Center, but he announced that he would sell the land to separate golf facility operators. The announcement from Clubhouse Capital said a 60,000 square foot gold dome and family facility may be added to the development later.
Travel agencies fined, restricted
BOSTON – Several travel agencies have been fined, forced to reimburse customers in a settlement with the state attorney general’s office over protests by disgruntled Super Bowl fans. Attorney General Tom Reilly reported that National Travel Vacations of Norwood; Sports World Tours of Portland, Ore., and Harvey Zuckerberger, a ticket broker who operates from Maine and California, must pay $70,500 to customers under terms of the settlement. National Travel and Sports World Tours were also ordered to pay $2,000 in civil penalties, Reilly said. The complaints by “hundreds” of fans arose when the travel packages and tickets they bought for as much as $1,000 each to the 1997 Super Bowl (New England Patriots vs. Green Bay Packers) were not produced.

Sepracor gets FDA approval for asthma treatment
MARLBOROUGH – Sepracor, Inc. has gained Food and Drug Administration approval to market its asthma treatment product, Xopenex, according to Bloomberg News Service. Sepracor maintains that its product, from which a chemical product of albuterol has been stripped, is safer than existing asthma products. Racemic albuterol is used in many asthma treatments.
DM Management to change name, open stores
HINGHAM – DM Management Co. announced that it will open a chain of full-priced retail stores based on its J. Jill brand and change its name to J. Jill Group, Inc. The direct-marketing company said it plans to open five to 10 J. Jill stores in 2000 and raise that to 50 on 2001. Shareholders will vote May 25 on the name change, already approved by the board of directors. The company said it would also start a J. Jill Internet site.
Planet Hollywood quits plan to open in Boston
BOSTON – Planet Hollywood has given up on its effort to locate a restaurant in Boston, although it has nearly finished the five story building on Boylston Street in which it planned to locate the restaurant. The building will be sold to a Boston firm, according to the Boston Globe. Planet Hollywood, based in Orlando, Fla., bought the Boylston Street site in 1997 after abandoning an earlier attempt to remodel a building near Faneuil Hall. The theme restaurant chain has been having problems of late, as have other theme restaurants, with talk of its discontinuing some of its operations nationally.
Mass. company supplying electric vehicles
WILMINGTON – Solectria Corporation has been chosen to supply electric vehicles to the Montreal 2000 Electric Vehicle Project which is designed to support the introduction of these vehicles to the Greater Montreal region. Several Solectria vehicles have been delivered to participants in the project, including sedans and delivery trucks to Hydro-Quebec, Environment Canada and Transport Canada, and two electricity-driven mail trucks to Canada Post and a CitiVan delivery truck to the city of Montreal. The project is sponsored by Hydro-Quebec, the government of Canada, the government of Quebec, Norvik Traction and the Centre d’Experimentation des Vehicules Electriques du Quebec. These agencies collectively will make funds available to commercial and government organizations interested in integrating electric vehicles into their fleets. Meanwhile data collection and the development of public battery recharging facilities will foster the growth of zero-emission vehicle technology.
Reed-Rico products partners with Taiwanese firm
HOLDEN – Reed-Rico, PCC Specialty Products, Inc., which has plants here and in Bristol, RI, for the production of machinery used to produce fasteners such as bolts and screws, has agreed to a marketing and selling partnership with Chun Zsu Machinery Industry Co. Ltd. of Taiwan. Sales and service of all tooling and machinery will be handled through the Holden facility.
2,000 at Shaw’s join bargaining unit
EAST BRIDGEWATER – About 2,000 employees of Shaw’s supermarkets throughout Massachusetts filled out union cards and became members of the bargaining unit represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 1445. A representative of the federal mediation service verified the signings. The new union members include cashiers, baggers, clerk and customer service representatives from 13 stores in 11 Massachusetts cities and towns.They join hundreds of Shaw’s employees who are already represented by the UFCW.
