NEW BEDFORD – New Jersey Headgear was scheduled to open a subsidiary in New Bedford this month, adding up to 15 jobs to the area, The Standard-Times reported.
The subsidiary, New Bedford Tactical Gear, will fill part of a Department of Defense contract awarded to Polymer Technologies Inc. to sew reusable military ammunition bags.
New Bedford Tactical Gear will open in the Darn-It! Inc. building at 430 Belleville Ave. The facility is expected to help former Eagles Industries stitchers who lost their jobs when the company shut down its New Bedford plant.
According to the Standard-Times, Mitch Cahn, president of Newark, N.J.-based New Jersey Headwear Corp., said he chose to site the company in New Bedford because of the workers’ skill “in making high-quality military gear and the assistance I got from the city and some of the state agencies that made it possible to set up shop in two weeks.”
Cahn said he plans to start with 12 to 15 former Eagle workers, eventually growing the company to 100 workers.
New Jersey Headwear does business under the name Unionwear. •
