You can find those answers — and more — in the newest map and guide to Newport, recently published by Newport Tourist Products LLC, a company established earlier this year by Betty Ann Czech of Portsmouth.
Aimed at today’s self-directed tourist, the map and guide can be used for a self-guided tour of the city, with 49 site descriptions and photos number-keyed to the map, as well as information on 80 other important sites.
The idea of creating the map/guide came to Czech when she was working as a tour guide on Ocean Drive. “I could not find a map or guide to clearly inform me about what I was seeing, some of the significant properties,” she told Providence Business News on Wednesday. Czech, a former journalist, has been a Newport tour guide for nearly 10 years. She has worked at Astor’s Beechwood mansion in Newport and was entertainment co-chair for Tall Ships 2007.
Historical information and architectural styles cited in the map and guide were checked for accuracy by the Newport Historical Society and Richard R. Long, a Newport architect, Czech said.
The map/guide is available for $3.00 at a number of locations, including the Newport Visitor Center, the shops of the Preservation Society of Newport County, the Newport History Museum and Shop at Brick Market, Fort Adams Trust Gift Shop. It can be ordered online for $5.00 at www.newportmap.net.
