Newspaper job, auto ads gain in recovery

Kenneth Goldstein surveys 51 newspapers
every month, from the Boston Globe to the Sacramento Bee, to help
track the U.S. economy. What he and other economists are reading
lately suggests the recovery may be for real.

“We’re seeing the beginning of a turnaround for the national
market,” with the volume of help-wanted advertising rising after
three years of decline, said Goldstein, chief economist of the
Conference Board, a New York research group.

Real estate classifieds, automobile advertisements and display
ads for national businesses such as retailers are also pointing to a
growing economy as companies begin hiring and spend more on
marketing. Gannett Co., the biggest U.S. newspaper publisher, said
last week its ad sales rose 9.4 percent in the first quarter, with
help-wanted ads soaring 23 percent in March.
