South Kingstown – At the opening of his Wakefield Campaign Headquarters held Tuesday, Kevin O’Neill, announced his candidacy for the State House from the Thirty-seventh Senate District.

“I’m running because I’ve had enough. I’m fed up with the State House.” O’Neill said in his announcement.
In his statement O’Neill blamed Rhode Island’s problems on the Leadership at the General Assembly. “They can’t balance the state’s budget and they can’t get out of the way so that Rhode Islanders can balance their own checkbooks,” O’Neill stated.

O’Neill further blasted the Leadership of the General Assembly for failing to act on the major problems facing the state, listing jobs, the economy, education, economic development, and tax reform as areas the Incumbent General Assembly Leadership has failed to address.
“Is it such a strange idea, then, to hold Incumbent Senators responsible for their actions — or lack of them?” he asked.

“The State House has lost touch with South Kingstown and Block Island,” O’Neill said, “And the only way to change the way the State House works is to change the Elected Official’s especially the Leadership of the State Senate.”

In his speech O’Neill outlined specific plans to introduce legislation to limit state spending by sun-setting tax and regulation matters, to assist the fishing industry by linking regulation to state fee’s, increase funding of public education in South County and Block Island through cuts in other areas of state spending and cut the minimum tax on business from the current $500 to $125.00, “This 75% decrease is a small but important step to help restart the entrepreneurial spirit of our small business owners.”

In addition, O’Neill announced that, if elected, he would introduce legislation to require the state to spend more money on The University of Rhode Island than on the state prison each Year. “We need to spend more money for caps and gowns than prison uniforms.” This reprioritization will allow our great state university to continue to be a world class institution and equal in importance allow our young people access to a world class education at a tuition they can afford.

O’Neill also blasted 14 year incumbent Sue Sosnowski for voting to raise taxes. “Sue Sosnowski has done little but vote at Senate Leaderships beck and call on budgets that raise taxes in South Kingstown and Block Island,” said O’Neill, “If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.”
