Awarded $100,000 from Champlin Foundations

PROVIDENCE, RI (Nov. 19, 2009) – Today, the Champlin Foundations announced a grant of $100,000 to Providence Children’s Museum’s Play Works Campaign for Kids. The award, which will help fund two new outdoor learning environments, moves the Museum’s capital campaign to more than $1 million in gifts and pledges to date.

The first projects of the $1.5 million Play Works Campaign – extensive renovations to the Museum’s historic building and the installation of a major new indoor exhibit – were completed in fall 2008. With the successful completion of the campaign, Providence Children’s Museum will increase its outdoor play capacity by opening two exciting new play spaces in its Children’s Garden in June 2010.

The Museum will also continue to provide inspiring play and learning opportunities for record numbers of children and caregivers of all backgrounds and to advocate for the importance of unstructured, creative play for children’s healthy development.

The Champlin Foundations make direct grants for capital needs to Rhode Island nonprofit organizations, with the goal of funding organizations that make a great impact on a broad segment of the population so they may provide hands-on equipment and facilities to the people they serve.

“We are grateful for and proud of the support of The Champlin Foundations,” said Museum executive director Janice O’Donnell. “It’s gratifying to know that The Foundations recognize the Museum’s fiscal responsibility, our value to the community, and especially our commitment to the underserved. It’s exciting that their generosity has moved our campaign so much closer to meeting the Kresge Challenge.”

The Museum has been challenged by the highly competitive Kresge Foundation to raise 90 percent of its campaign goal – $1,350,000 – by March 31, 2010 to receive a $150,000 challenge grant to make up the rest.
