Providence finance chief Prignano to leave for Coventry job

Providence Finance Director Alex Prignano will retire from city government, after nearly 30 years, Mayor David N. Cicilline said in a news release Monday, Sept. 18.

Prignano will be resigning effective Oct. 13, Cicilline said, to accept the position of business manager for the Cumberland School District.

“Alex Prignano was a very valuable member of our team,” the mayor said, “and although I’m sorry to see him go, I’m grateful for the work he’s done to significantly improve the financial health of our city. Investors on Wall Street now look at Providence with a new eye and we have ‘A’ grades from all the major bond rating agencies. There’s no question, Alex played a key role in helping to put the city’s finances back on track.”

“It’s with mixed feelings that I leave Providence city government,” Prignano said. “I love this city and I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished during my tenure.”

Employed by the City of Providence since 1977, Prignano was appointed in 1999 to the position of finance director, overseeing a $610 million city budget and a staff of 60.

The city will launch a national search to fill the position he is leaving vacant, Cicilline said.
