Providence shaken in tragedy’s wake

While Gov. Lincoln Almond this afternoon said there is no reason to believe that Rhode Island would be a target in a terrorist attack, the state remained on alert, with its airports closed and its trains shut down. Bonanza buses continued to service to Boston, but have canceled runs to Washington, D.C. and New York City.

“This is an act of war against the United States,” said Almond, in a mid-day press conference at the State House. “You can’t have anything more cowardly than this. To use civilians on those planes was a cowardly act.”

The terrorist attacks on Tuesday morning that saw at least three planes hijacked and two of them forced to crash into the World Trade Center in New York City has shaken Rhode Island and particularly, its capital city.
