Raytheon Co.’s Portsmouth-based Integrated Defense Systems division is to build, test and deliver 52 of its MK 20 MOD 1 ship-defense missile systems to the governments of Japan and Canada.
Each MK 20 MOD 1 canister holds a RIM-7 Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missile, in a MK 48 vertical launching system. The guided-missile system is designed for ship self-defense.

The $13 million fixed-price contract was non-competitively procured via the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command, in Washington, D.C., through the foreign military sales program. Japan has an 88-percent share of the contract, and Canada, the remaining 12 percent.
The work will be performed by IDS subcontractor Stork Fokker, at its facility in Hoogeveen, the Netherlands. It is due to be completed by February 2009.
