April 19, 2011 [Providence] The Rhode Island Black Heritage Society will co-host a pre-performance reception when the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater visits Providence in May.
The reception will take place Tuesday, May 10, 5:30 PM in the Marquee Room, located at the Providence Performing Arts Center [220 Weybosset Street].
The reception, co-hosted by FirstWorks, is the third of five Black History events organized by the Society to raise funds to support its collection of African American artifacts, as well as its lecture series for adults and students.
“We are excited to offer another wonderful opportunity to the community,” said Joyce Stevos, president of The Society. “We invite patrons to join us for an intimate gathering in support of The Society before the Alvin Ailey dance group lifts our spirits through its revolutionary performances.”
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has performed for an estimated 23 million people in 48 states and in 71 countries. The company has earned a reputation as one of the most acclaimed international ambassadors of American culture, promoting the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance heritage.
The program at the Providence Performing Arts Center will include Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece “Revelations” which tells the African American journey from slavery to freedom and the fight for equality.
This event is being chaired by Elayne Walker-Cabral.
