Bacou buys another glove company
SMITHFIELD – Bacou USA, which had itself been the object of speculation about a potential buyer, announced that it had purchased another glove company to add to its growing stable of such companies. Bacou announced that it had purchased Platinum Protective Products, Inc. of Wilkesboro, N.C., a manufacturer and seller of cut and abrasion-resistant knitted gloves. Other glove companies recently acquired by Bacou are Perfect Fit Glove Co., SCHAS Circular Industries, and Whiting + Davis of North Attleboro.
Verrecchia moves up at Hasbro
PAWTUCKET – Hasbro, Inc., chose Alfred J. Verrecchia to replace Herb Baum as the company’s president and chief operating officer. Verrecchia, a URI graduate joined Hasbro 35 years ago. Most recently he had been executive vice president and chief financial officer. In announcing the appointment of Verrecchia, Hasbro’s board chairman Alan G. Hassenfeld cited him a “one of the best and most experienced executives in our industry” and described his appointment as “the natural step for an individual who has contributed so much in his 35 years at Hasbro.” Baum, who became president and COO at Hasbro in 1999 is leaving to become chairman, president and chief executive officer of the Dial Corp. in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Big Party closing Warwick store
WARWICK – The Big Party which is going through bankruptcy announced that it would be closing its store at 300 Quaker Lane, one of 21 stores the company said it would close, according to the Providence Journal. However, some of its stores, including those in Cranston, East Providence, North Providence, Attleboro, Bellingham and North Dartmouth have been sold to IParty, Inc., which has not announced any plans to close them. A store-closing sale and liquidation were scheduled to begin immediately at 300 Quaker Lane.
Cox Cable fined for closing studio
WEST WARWICK – The Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission announced that it had fined Cox Communications $2,200 for closing one of its public access studios before the PUC had time to evaluate its request. The PUC denounced Cox in its statement for showing “a disregard for the (PUC) division’s ultimate authority over certain aspects of Cox’s franchise.”
Budget collections up over prior year
PROVIDENCE — General revenue collections by the State Controller totaled $143.8 million for the one-month period ending in July – representing a 12.3 percent increase over collections for the same period a year ago. The enacted estimates project a 4.4 percent increase in taxes and departmental revenues over fiscal year 2000. Taxes have grown by 13.7 percent when accounting adjustments are made.

Astro-Med Reports increase in sales
WEST WARWICK –Astro-Med, Inc. reports sales of $13,219,000 with net income of $267,000, for the second quarter ending July 29, 2000. For the corresponding period of the prior year, sales were $11,085,000 with net income of $271,000. For the six-month period of the current fiscal year, sales were $25,593,000 with earnings of $426,000. For the corresponding six-month period in the prior fiscal year, sales were $21,462,000 and earnings were at the break-even level.
American Power Conversion products offered by EDS Worldwide
WEST KINGSTON — American Power announced that it has entered into the power protection industry’s first end-to-end worldwide sales agreement with EDS. Through this agreement, the EDS global sales force will sell APC’s comprehensive product and services offering, from surge protectors to large three-phase uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to professional and consulting services, both within EDS and externally to its global customer base. EDS has also selected APC to be its corporate standard for power protection solutions.
