RI Foundation’s 27 grants total $1.7 million

In it’s second of three grant making sessions this year, The Rhode Island Foundation Board of Directors has approved 27 economic and community development grants for more than $1.7 million. In support of its commitment to provide affordable housing, the Foundation awarded the Providence based Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC) $100,000 for its Neighborhood Development Fund. Now in it’s fifth year, the fund supports nine community development corporations (CDCs) throughout the state to increase their ability to develop housing, create economic development opportunities.

The Housing Net-work’s Homeowner’s Education Center, was awarded $80,000 for homeownership education for low and moderate income families. Asserting the need for a cultural community as a factor in economic development, the Foundation gave the Heritage Harbor Corporation $100,000 for operating support during the pre-construction phase of the Heritage Harbor Museum.

Close to $95,000 in support of small and medium-sized arts organizations was awarded through two statewide organizations: Expansion Arts, which supports emerging culturally or ethnically-specific arts organizations serving disadvantaged communities; and Piggyback Grants, add-on awards to the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts General Operating Support Awards.

An additional $145,000 in funding was awarded to five other smaller arts programs.

Five neighborhood and downtown revitalization projects received $220,000. Seven non-profit and leadership development organizations received $236,000, and $110,000 was awarded to three job training and job creation organization groups.

Three environmental groups received $90,000 for protection of natural resources, land and water.

The Rhode Island Foundation, which was founded in 1916, is one of the nation’s largest and oldest charitable organizations serving a specific geographic community.
