R.I. legislators introduce casino legislation

Members of the House of Representatives introduced legislation Wednesday to place a constitutional amendment on the November 2006 ballot that gives Rhode Islanders the right to vote on a Narragansett Indian Casino.

The legislation, if approved by the General Assembly, would place in Rhode Islanders’ hands the decision as to whether a Narragansett Indian Casino should be approved in the town of West Warwick. If endorsed by the voters, an estimated $144 million in annual casino revenues would be dedicated to property-tax relief throughout the state.

“Rhode Islanders deserve an active role in deciding their state’s fiscal and economic future,” said state Rep. Timothy Williamson, D-West Warwick and Coventry, who is the prime sponsor of the legislation. “If the voters choose to support the casino project, Rhode Island will take its first significant step in recapturing the millions of dollars and thousands of jobs we have been losing to southeastern Connecticut each and every year.”
