Rising education costs demand more focus

Parents of college-age children know that tuition rates at the state’s three public institutions of higher learning have been rising dramatically.

Costs at the University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College and the Community College of Rhode Island are still far below what private schools in the state charge — in-state tuition at URI is $7,724, compared with $34,620 at Brown and $24,800 at Providence College.

But for working-class and even middle-income families, rising college costs can limit access to higher education, with very real, negative consequences.

The implications for Rhode Island are huge. As the economy demands an increasingly skilled work force, we cannot afford to leave large segments of the population behind.

The state is investing in education, especially with large bond issues for capital improvements at URI. But the state’s students need more. The General Assembly and governor worked together to bring about tax relief in 2006. Why not use that model to focus the state’s attention.
