PROVIDENCE – The Onion – a weekly satirical newspaper found at coffee shops, bookstores and bars in cities like New York, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia – launched its first Rhode Island edition Thursday.
Gaspee Publishing and The Onion entered a franchise partnership in late August to publish the print version of the newspaper in the Ocean State and Bristol County, Mass. – the paper’s 16th market.

According to the agreement’s terms, Gaspee assumes business management responsibilities, including advertising sales, printing and distribution, and sale of some advertising on The Onion’s website, a news release said.
“We’re thrilled to have our irreverent headlines all over Rhode Island as well as edging their way into Massachusetts. We think this is a great fit, particularly with all of the colleges and universities in the region, with plenty of students to appreciate our satire,” said Carrie Palmer, director of franchising for The Onion.
The Onion began in 1988 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Now the newspaper and its non-satirical entertainment section, The A.V. Club, reach about 2 million by print and 10 million online every month. It also has several books and a web-video series called Onion News Network.
