[SMITHFIELD, RI] May 2011 — On Friday, May 20, 2011, the students, teachers, and staff of Old County Road School (OCRS) will participate in a walk-a-thon coordinated by the school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Contributions raised by the event will be donated by the PTA to a new initiative in the town, The Old County Road Playground Project.
“For years there has been talk about the need to rebuild our school playground,” says concerned OCRS parent and Playground Project committee member, Rema Tomka. “The two playgrounds adjacent to OCRS were built over 30 years ago and have served students and local children well,” says Mrs. Tomka. “An insurer’s report confirms what is visible to any visitor: the playground has reached the end of its useful life and requires replacement.”
A timeline of 100 weeks has been set to raise the approximately $70K needed for new equipment, landscaping, installation of a paved walking path, and refurbishment of the current basketball court and playing field.
OCRS Principal and Playground Project committee member Laurie Sullivan states, “By working together we can make a safe, new playground and park a reality for our students and community by 2013.” The playground would be available to the community outside of school hours.
About The Old County Road Playground Project
Founded in 2011, a group of parents, teachers and community members concerned with the state and safety of The Old County Road School playground formed a committee to raise funds to build a new playground. The initiative, presented as a community park would provide not only safe structures on which school children could play but a park, walking path, and gathering place for the residents of East Smithfield who currently do not have such an area. The committee has set a goal of raising the necessary funds by June 2013; one hundred weeks.
