TECH CORPS Rhode Island will hold its second annual event promoting technology access for girls, at the Knight Campus of the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick. May 16, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Grrl Tech II Career Day: Exploring Your Possibilities” will be combination of a career fair featuring booths with women who work in the technology field, hands-on workshops in the Math, Chemistry, Computer and Engineering labs and seminars for teachers discussing gender equity in education. The target audience for the event includes sophomore and junior high school girls and teachers. Women representatives from AT&T, Brown University, Bryant College, Community College of Rhode Island, CompUSA, Compusource, Cox Communications, Delta Dental of Rhode Island , GTECH, i.d. group, Johnson & Wales University, Network 6, New England Institute of Technology, Pfizer Inc, The Providence Business News, Providence Gas Company Raytheon, Roger Williams University, Stanley Bostich Inc., SyNet Inc., UNICOM, Verizon, the University of Rhode Island, WSBE Channel 36 and others will take part in the career fair. Sponsors for Grrl Tech II are Textron, the Community College of Rhode Island, and the i.d. group.

This event is designed to assist us in addressing several key issues for under-served and unserved groups, specifically in helping to level the playing field in the area of technology careers for females and minorities,” said JoAnn Johnson, director TECH CORPS Rhode Island. “Although the best jobs in the future are purportedly in technology, women and minorities are still under-represented in those careers. We wanted to help female students begin to think about ways to prepare for the future and to see and ask question about the wide variety of careers in technology that are available. By having women who are in technology-related careers participate in the career fair, we want to provide role models what embody the many career possibilities.”
The keynote speaker will be Lynn Bloomer, program manager for the Cisco
Systems and a part time assistant professor in the Computer Studies Department at CCRI. Presently she is a member of the Information Technology Academy and WomenTech Leadership Team at CCRI. She has spent the past two-year working with the ITA on implementing a Cisco Regional and Local Academy at CCRI, and implementing Cisco Local Academies in eight Rhode Island high schools. Recently, she joined the Women Tech Leadership Team which is working to find ways to prepare women for high wage, high skill technical careers. Before joining CCRI, and implementing Cisco Local Academies in eight Rhode Island high schools. Before joining CCRI, Bloomer was an adjunct professor and Network Administrator at Villanova University.
Donna Milgram, founder and executive director of the Institute for Women in Trades, Technology & Science (IWITTS) a California-based national non-profit organization dedicated to integrating women in traditionally male-dominated occupations will lead the teacher discussions. She has developed numerous resource publications, produced an instructional video, and conducted hundreds of workshops on recruiting and retaining women in non-traditional occupations at national and state conferences and for individual employers, schools and agencies.
TECH CORPS Rhode Island, a state chapter of the United States TECH CORPS, has worked in over 76 schools in 26 school districts providing information technology in a variety of ways — teacher training, Internet wiring, and special events.
