PROVIDENCE – Chuong V. Nguyen, formerly of Woonsocket, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for not paying to the government $557,180 in taxes that he had withheld from clients of his Woonsocket temporary employment agency, prosecutors said last week.
Nguyen had run the agency out of his home from 1996 to 2002, telling client companies that he would take care of the payroll taxes, workers’ compensation and liability insurance. But, he admitted to the Internal Revenue Service, he had kept the money and gambled most of it.

In June, Nguyen pleaded guilty to failing to pay over federal withholding taxes. He is scheduled to report to prison Nov. 13. When he is released, he must file amended tax returns and pay any taxes he owes; he must also refrain from gambling.
