Wilmington, Mass.-based Textron Systems Corp. – a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company – yesterday announded plans to unveil an airbag system for defending against the rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) that are commonly used by insurgents to attack military convoys and bases.
The Tactical Rocket Propelled Grenade Airbag Protection System (TRAPS) will be on show this month at the AUSA Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., Textron Systems said.

TRAPS is among the products that were added to the company’s portfolio in July, when Textron Systems acquired Innovative Survivability Technologies Inc. (IST). The TRAPS technology combines a simple radar device and a modified commercial airbag system.
Rod Beach, general manager of operations for Textron Systems, said in the news release: “As the battlespace continues to shift into more urban settings, the need for close-in protection is greater than ever.
“There is an on-going and significant problem with RPGs. TRAPS is a safe, proven and cost-effective RPG defeat system that is readily available to protect personnel and vehicles against sudden and lethal attacks by rocket propelled devices.”
Funding for the TRAPS RPG Defeat System included $3.5M provided in 2005 by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Quick Reaction Contract Office, and administered by the Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC). An additional $3M was provided by Congress in the fiscal 2007 Defense Appropriations Bill.
TRAPS will be on display in the Textron Systems Booth, number 1602, in Hall 3 of the Washington Convention Center, along with products representing the company’s Marine & Land, HR Textron and other operations.
