The Art Connection-RI’s mission is to make visual art accessible to people who might not otherwise experience art in their daily lives. TAC-RI identifies artists willing to donate their art, shows a slide presentation of the artworks to qualified nonprofits, and allows them to choose art that has meaning for them. The works of art then become the permanent property of the nonprofits.
Since its founding in 2011, TAC-RI has worked with a diverse range of nonprofits in Rhode Island to help beautify spaces and lift the spirits of their staff and constituents through the donation of original art. To date the TAC-RI has placed 264 artworks by 40 local artists at 24 nonprofit agencies in Rhode Island, including Sojourner House, Year Up, Open Doors, the Women’s Center of RI, Children’s Friend, and many other community service agencies. Applications by another qualified nonprofit are pending.
Wendy Ingram, Acting Director, says, “In the 3 1/2 short years we have been in business, we are proud that more than 50 local artists have made 437 artworks available to be selected by Rhode Island nonprofits. Artists like placing their work where it will be viewed by an appreciative audience.” She continues, “We have been thrilled to receive feedback, such as from Amy Peters of Children’s Friend, who said “The artwork at our Summer Street site has added so much to the friendliness of the space that we would like to add art to our site in Central Falls as well.”
TAC-RI’s art placement program is made possible through the generous support of individual donors and is funded in part by grants from the Rhode Island Foundation, the Fay Slover Fund and the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts. The Art Connection-RI
The Art Connection-RI (TAC-RI) builds connections between artists and their communities by bringing art to community organizations – clinics, youth and senior service programs, job training centers, shelters and residential programs, and more. The TAC-RI identifies artists willing to donate their work, organizes the works for presentation to qualified recipients, helps them select the appropriate work, and teaches them to care for the art. These works of art are then the permanent property of the nonprofits. In their new environments, art stimulates dialogue, creativity, learning and well being. This simple but powerful idea has resulted in art installations at many organizations, giving those who often have the least access to art direct contact in their own communities.
