La Salle Academy to Present Honorary Diplomas to Former Students on Veterans Day

“The purpose behind our search was locate those men or their next-of-kin in order to award honorary La Salle Academy diplomas to them on Veterans Day, November 11, 2009,” said La Salle Academy President Brother Michael Mc Kenery. “To date we have located seven veterans who are still alive and the families of an additional 16 men who died in service or served, came home and have since died.”
The specific criteria for those being honored is: Any student who left La Salle Academy in good standing without graduating, served honorably and, upon returning from the war, never received a high school diploma from La Salle or any other high school.
“We know with certainty that thirty-seven boys who meet our criteria left school before graduating during the war years,” continued Brother Michael. “We will continue to search for the fourteen, and others, who we have not located. They all deserve to be honored.”
The event will include a Mass celebrated by Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of Providence, the conferring of diplomas by Brother Michael Mc Kenery and a reception. Also attending will be a military color guard, a number of La Salle Academy alumni who are veterans as well as members of the La Salle faculty and staff.
