PROVIDENCE – Raymond E. Gallison Jr., the former R.I. House finance committee chairman, has been sentenced to 51 months in federal prison, WJAR-TV NBC 10 reports.
Gallison, 64, pleaded guilty in March to nine federal criminal charges: four counts of wire fraud, one count of aggravated identity theft, one count of aiding the filing of a false tax document and two counts of filing a false tax return.

At the time of his guilty plea, Gallison admitted to stealing and misusing public and private funds through an array of fraudulent schemes while serving as finance chairman, including theft from the estate of a deceased individual, theft of funds from a Special Needs Trust, falsifying tax documents and failing to pay taxes on income acquired through his criminal actions.
In court, federal prosecutors referred to Gallison as a “scoundrel” who used his law license as a shield. Gallison’s lawyer countered that the former representative’s actions had less of an impact because the victims were charities.
Gallison resigned from his seat in the General Assembly in May 2016 “due to personal reasons” at the offset of the investigation.
