PROVIDENCE – GTECH Corp.’s president and chief executive has been forced to apologize to Texas officials after it emerged that a consultant advising the Lone Star State on a new lottery contract also worked for GTECH.

CEO Jaymin B. Patel offered the apology even though a preliminary review found no information sharing between GTECH and Gartner Inc., the tech research firm. Texas officials have decided to extend the bid deadline by 30 days as a result of the flap, The Associated Press reported.

Texas’ lottery commissioners hope to select a lottery operator by August. The deal could be worth $100 million annually, according to the AP.

GTECH, a subsidiary of Italy’s Lottomatica Group SpA, operates lotteries in a number of states including Rhode Island, Maryland, Arizona and California.
