PROVIDENCE – Three wind turbines at the Narragansett Bay Commission’s (NBC) Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Facility may just fly. The Federal Aviation Administration has granted permission for the commission to erect the 360-foot towers.
The commission says the towers – standing 20 feet shorter than The Residences at The Westin – would provide 55 percent to 60 percent of the current electrical power demand at the facility. The commission said that the electricity produced by the turbines would have a value – at current electricity rates – of more than $900,000 annually and would offset approximately 3,000 tons a year of carbon dioxide that would have been released from fossil fuel-generated electricity. The Commission plans to have the turbines in place by October 2011.

NBC began investigating the use wind energy in 2006 after receiving a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. That work led to an additional $25,000 from the R.I. Office of Energy Resources to conduct a full feasibility study between 2007 and 2008.
“We were very fortunate to have the help and support of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation and our congressional delegation as we pursued this green energy project,” said Raymond Marshall, NBC executive director. “Additionally, our neighbors in the Field’s Point area have shown great support for the use of wind energy at the treatment plant.”
