Ground is broken for Warwick transit hub

The long-delayed interposal transportation hub in Warwick moved closer to reality Monday, with a groundbreaking attended by city, state and federal officials.

The $222 million project will ease travel within Rhode Island, as well as between here and Massachusetts.

The new center will be about 1,500 feet from T.F. Green Airport. It will include a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter-rail station, connected to the via an elevated walkway with moving sidewalks, as well as space for buses, auto rental agencies, and some parking for commuter vehicles.

The hoped-for connection to Amtrak and its Avella high-speed rail service will require further expenditures, however, and is not part of the current project.

Construction is due to be completed in 2009.
