Shipments of major home appliances in
the U.S. fell 1.2 percent in July compared with a year ago, led by
declines in deliveries of room air conditioners, according to the
Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.
July shipments of appliances totaled 5.53 million units, down
from 5.6 million in July 2003. The figures, which aren’t adjusted
for seasonal variations, account for shipments for the U.S. market
and include both imported and domestically produced appliances.
Export shipments aren’t included in the statistics.

The July decrease was led by a 64 percent fall in deliveries of
room air conditioners to 193,300 units, the organization’s figures
showed. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers is a
Washington-based trade group representing makers of major and
portable appliances and appliance components sold in the United States.
