Siemens Medical Solutions recently recognized Dr. Reid Coleman chief medical informatics officer of Lifespan health system, as a winner of the fifth annual Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems awards for achievement in the field of applied medical informatics.
Coleman was recognized for his pioneering work in implementing computerized physician order entry.

As the physician leader at Lifespan, Dr. Coleman oversaw a wide-scale deployment of Pennsylvania-based Siemens’ INVISION system. Today, 80 percent of physician orders are computerized at the system’s flagship Rhode Island Hospital in Providence; two other hospitals in the system have also implemented CPOE. At Lifespan, clinicians also utilize personal digital assistants via PDAccess Clinical Assistant and a wireless network to review and capture pertinent patient data at the point of care.
To facilitate rollout and physician adoption, Coleman developed an e-mail feedback system to help IT staff work more closely with clinicians to design order sets that match physician ordering patterns and report back on how they worked. He also launched a unique IT department rotation for residents. So far, 10 residents have completed one-month tours of service within the system’s IT department.
