Cicilline overhauls Providence housing programs

Aiming to make the greatest possible impact with limited resources, Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline and the city Department of Planning and Development have unveiled a new, seven-point housing plan the mayor said will give residents their “rightful share of the American dream.”

Dubbed the Neighborhood Investment Housing Program of 2004, the plan consolidates existing programs and application processes and provides down payment and closing-cost assistance; home purchasing assistance for city employees; home repair loans for general and code violation work; emergency repair/replacement financing; lead hazard reduction grants and loans; and home repair help for senior citizens.

In addition, the city said it will continue to support local nonprofits in home development, acquisition, relocation, construction and/or rehabilitation.
