Governor Donald L. Carcieri yesterday announced the success of a pilot program that enables auto dealers to register vehicles without going to a Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. Since the pilot program began in mid-October, 438 vehicles were sold and registered at one of four participating car dealers.
By registering the vehicles remotely, these four dealers avoided taking up time and space at DMV offices. Three dealers in Middletown and one in North Kingstown are participating in the dealer registration program: Autocenter Cadillac & Oldsmobile, Autocenter Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Suzuki, Autocenter Ford-Saab-Hyundai in Middletown; and Bailey’s Chrysler-Plymouth-Isuzu in North Kingstown.

“Back in October, my administration launched a pilot program to enable four car dealerships to register vehicles right from their premises,” Carcieri stated. “That means neither the dealer nor the purchaser had to make a special trip to the Division of Motor Vehicles to conduct this transaction. This is about delivering services efficiently, swiftly and effectively.”
“My vision for the DMV also includes implementing measures to lessen the burden on employees for high volume services,” the Governor continued. “We are accomplishing this goal. Since the inception of this program, 438 vehicles were sold and registered at one of the four participating dealerships. To enable us to build upon our success, we plan to expand this program to 10 additional locations by mid-January.”
The Fiscal Fitness program also has managed to collect on $88,000 in checks that were made out to the DMV since 1994, but remained uncollected.
In other DMV news, AAA has renewed 2,779 driver’s licenses since Nov. 26, when they began processing renewals for its members. Additionally, 602 vehicle registrations have been renewed in the last six weeks through DMV’s on-line vehicle registration renewal program. The on-line registration renewal service is available at the new DMV web site www.dmv.ri.gov.
