American Power to focus on corporate data centers

West Kingston-based American Power Conversion Corp., a
maker of power-supply products, is targeting corporate data
centers for sales, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing
Rodger Dowdell, president and co-founder of the company.

Hurricanes and blackouts have persuaded American Power,
which produces equipment for uninterruptible power supplies, that
more companies now want electricity to keep computers running
when other sources are shut down, the Journal said.

Though some people routinely buy such equipment when they
install computers or communications systems, most consumers and
small businesses take the risk that their power will stay on, the
Journal said.

Aaron Davis, marketing chief for American Power, estimates that fewer than 2 percent of all
potential customers have unlimited power supply equipment, the
paper reported.

The company plans to focus on corporate data centers, where
computer buyers always buy backup power and the average sale is
$70,000, the newspaper added.
