Rep. William H. Murphy, a Republican representing Jamestown and Newport, is sponsoring a resolution that the state, as part of its Environmental Impact Study for Quonset Point/Davisville, include research into the feasibility of developing a hotel/condominium and marina complex at the former Navy base.
We would hope that the federal EIS – which is expected to take several years and cost millions of dollars before it is done – would already be designed to provide the kind of information that Murphy is seeking.
Our understanding is that the EIS is so comprehensive that it should tell us not only about whether a container port is feasible at Quonset Point/Davisville, but what kinds of development might make sense there.

For the time and money being invested, the EIS should provide many more answers than questions. Murphy registers a legitimate request. We would suggest it is unnecessary.
