Staples reports sales decline

Staples Inc., the second-biggest U.S. office-supplies retailer, said retail same-store sales fell 4 percent to 6 percent in the fiscal third quarter.

The week and a half following the terrorist attacks, the Framingham, Massachusetts-based company lost $30 million to $40 million in sales, said John Mahoney, executive vice president and chief administrative officer, on a conference call with analysts and investors.

The company still expects to meet profit estimates for the year, Mahoney said. Analysts’ average estimate is 64 cents a share, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.
