PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse has expressed his support to transfer Newport Creamery’s bankruptcy case to Rhode Island.
According to the Attorney General’s office, Whitehouse filed a Statement of Support of a motion filed by Bank Rhode Island requesting that the United States Bankruptcy Court in Tampa, Fla. transfer the Creamery’s case here.

Whitehouse agreed that because most of Newport Creamery’s restaurants, financial records, employees and creditors are located in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, proceedings should take place here. He also noted that requiring creditors, particularly employees and small businesses, to travel to Florida for court proceedings would cause them an “undue burden and expense.”
Middletown, R.I.-based Newport Creamery filed for bankruptcy protection in Tampa on June 26. A family-owned business since 1928, the company was sold to Clearwater, Fla.-based Swain Development Corporation in 1999.
