PUC authorizes Narragansett Electric’s contract proposal

WARWICK, R.I. — The Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission has unanimously authorized Narragansett Electric to purchase power for the state’s non-residential Last Resort Service (LRS) customers.

The electric company has been authorized to enter a three-month contract proposal under which non-residential LRS customers will pay 8.925 cents per kilowatt hour in February, 8.505 cents per kilowatt hour in March and 7.875 cents per kilowatt hour in April. The new rates include a fixed charge for Installed Capacity (ICAP) requirements incurred by the company, adding about one cent to the monthly kilowatt-hour rate.

Affected customers include all Narragansett Electric non-residential customers who left the company’s Standard Offer Rate service to contract with an outside power supplier and have since returned to Narragansett Electric.

Non-residential LRS customers now pay 7.75 cents per kilowatt hour, not including the ICAP charge. There are some 1,000 non-residential LRS customers, according to the PUC.
