Illinois county buys Nestor’s rail crossing system
PROVIDENCE – Nestor Traffic Systems, Inc., a partially owned subsidiary of Nestor, Inc., announced last week that DuPage County, Illinois has a warded a contract to the company for its Rail CrossingGuard automated rail crossing enforcement system. The system will be installed at one of the county’s high-risk crossings, the company said. The system is designed to address safety problems at rail crossings by monitoring vehicle traffic and rail crossing signals to detect and record signal violations. The system uses advanced video-processing technology and video cameras to detect and track vehicles as they approach a rail crossing. If a violation is detected, Rail CrossingGuard records a brief video sequence of the violation, including close-up color images of both the front and rear license plates of the vehicle, as well as driver images if it is a legislative requirement. All violation video images are automatically transmitted in digital format via high-speed phone lines from the crossing to a central processing facility, where a citation is developed and issued to the violator. The company said it is developing a whole series of products to address rail crossing safety. The company said that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Rail Administration statistics show that in the U.S. a train collides with a vehicle or person once every two hours, and in an average year more people die at highway-rail crossings than in commercial airline crashes.

”With the introduction of Powerstreet, we’re relaunching our entire brokerage business, and in the process, redefining what it means to involved investors,” said Gary Burkhead, vice chairman, FMR Corp. and president of Fidelity Personal Investments & Brokerage Group.
The new product, with several enhancements, is a reflection of the company’s belief that more and more trading will occur on-line. Fidelity said its online trading business has increased from 7 percent of commissionable trades in January 1997 to more than 79 percent of commissionable trades in August of this year.

APC participates in HP communications service
American Power Conversion (APC) has become the first power protection vendor to participate in Hewlett-Packard Company’s Business Communications Service (BCS) Solution Partner Program. HP BCS customers wishing to protect against power outages may utilize APC’s power protection solutions. The HP BCS, which targets small-to-medium-size businesses and remote/branch offices of larger corporations, integrates communications applications, including such telephone-system functionality as voice mail, call center, Internet Protocol (IP) telephony, Microsoft Small Business Server, and remote-management tools.
APC has also announced that Internet Commerce Corporation, a pioneer in e-business supply chain connectivity, has reached an agreement with APC to use ICC’s B2B CommerceSense service and trading partner rollout program to enhance the efficiency of its supply chain process. APC will use the network to provide broad business-to-business connectivity, which translates, archives and delivers data to trading partners in any format or platform needed. The system provides security, encryption and reporting features and is used for managing large-scale, mission critical documents and large files.
Kopin announces use of HBT Transistors
TAUNTON, Mass.– Kopin Corporation a leading provider of gallium arsenide (GaAs) HBT transistors for the wireless and fiberline telecommunications market, last week announced it has started shipping 6-inch InGaP and AlGaAs HBT transistor wafers from its new, high volume production systems. This new production platform provides high volume support for six – inch telecom circuit production programs that begin next year. Two such new systems are presently in place at Kopin and additional systems are scheduled for installation in 2000.
Kopin’s proprietary high performance HBT transistors are used to produce circuits for CDMA, TDMA and GSM digital PCS handsets, as well as for the upcoming third generation (3G) digital wireless standard. Kopin’s HBT transistor wafers are also used for circuits for broadband OC-48/OC-192 SONET systems, which form the backbone of the highest speed fiber optic networks.

IT service company wins New England contract
MIDDLETOWN – Dynamic Systems’ New England division has been awarded a contract to provide information technology assistance to four of the New England state:s Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Dynamic Systems, based in Alexandria, Va., is an engineering and management services company, offering service and solutions for Web-based and e-commerce problems, as well as enterprise resource planning and systems integration. The contract obtained by competitive bid and described by Dynamic Systems’ program manager Paul Fleischman as an “umbrella contract” was awarded jointly by the four states and will be serviced from the Rhode Island office. Assisting Dynamic Systems in the project will be AGCS of Stoneham, Mass., and Opteme, Inc. of Portsmouth, N.H. Terms of the two-year contract, with options for an additional two years, were not otherwise disclosed. .
