Heightened air travel precautions went into effect across the country today at 4 a.m. local time, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said, as the National Threat Advisory was raised to orange, or high-risk. Reports from U.S. airports indicate those precautions include severe restrictions on carryon items.
“Over the last few hours, British authorities have arrested a significant number of extremists engaged in a substantial plot to destroy multiple passenger aircraft flying from the United Kingdom to the United States,” Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in an early-morning statement. “Currently, there is no indication, however, of plotting within the United States.

“We believe that these arrests have significantly disrupted the threat, but we cannot be sure that the threat has been entirely eliminated or the plot completely thwarted.”
Long delays were reported and some flights to and from the United Kingdom were cancelled. Travelers were being advised to confirm their flights and to arrive at the airport least an hour earlier than usual.
“Due to the nature of the threat revealed by this investigation,” Chertoff added, “we are prohibiting any liquids – including beverages, hair gels, and lotions – from being carried on the airplane.” Baby formula was the only exception noted in reports from U.S. airports.
“Travelers should also anticipate additional security measures within the airport and at screening checkpoints, Chertoff said.” U.S. travelers said they were required to check all bags, and carry on only their money, identification and required medications. In England – where the U.S. risk level on flights to and from the United States was red, or critical – all passenger electronic and electrical items reportedly were banned.
“These measures will continue to assure that our aviation system remains safe and secure,” Chertoff said. “Travelers should go about their plans confidently, while maintaining vigilance in their surroundings and exercising patience with screening and security officials.
“The United States and the United Kingdom are fully united and resolute in this effort and in our ongoing efforts to secure our respective homelands.”
