American Cruise Lines, a luxury cruise line specializing in small-ship tours of U.S. destinations, has added Providence as a departure port for its New England Islands cruises, which run from June through September.
Mayor David N. Cicilline officially welcomed the cruise line to the city on Sept. 9 as the 215-foot American Spirit, the newest addition to the line’s fleet, sailed into India Point Park. The mayor greeted the 100 passengers and presented a key to the city to Charles Robertson, president of American Cruise Lines.

“Providence has been a magnificent and gracious city, making this a wonderful experience for American Cruise Lines passengers and employees,” Robertson said in a news release. “I have received only positive comments from our guests. Providence has worked out perfectly.”
The American Spirit stops in Bristol, Newport, Block Island, Nantucket Island, Martha’s Vineyard, Fall River and New Bedford. Robertson said most of the passengers fly into Providence from cities throughout the country and spend one or two nights here before boarding. The ship features four decks, 51 passenger staterooms, dining room with panoramic views, and a library, and the line boasts of “masterfully skilled chefs” who create “delectable feasts” from seafood, meats, and produce often purchased at the ports visited.
