Amtrak, the U.S. passenger railroad
that almost shut down in 2002 from a lack of funds, would get a
$175 million federal budget increase this year under an agreement
reached by lawmakers, Senator Patty Murray said.
Amtrak would receive $1.22 billion in the fiscal year that
began Oct. 1, up from $1.05 billion in the previous year, Murray
told reporters after a meeting with House and Senate lawmakers.
Murray, of Washington state, is the top Democrat on the Senate
Appropriations Committee’s transportation panel.

Representative Ernest Istook, an Oklahoma Republican and
chairman of the House Appropriations Committee’s transportation
panel, said he wasn’t ready to disclose the agreement. “I’m not
disputing” Murray’s statement, he said in an interview.
The Senate had approved $1.35 billion for Amtrak while the
House passed legislation funding the railroad at $900 million. A
House-Senate conference committee was meeting to resolve
differences between the two pieces of legislation.
