Applied Subsea forms subsidiary, begins production

Applied Subsea Technologies Inc., a local marine science and technology company that develops and applies advanced manned diving systems for ocean exploration, has formed a subsidiary to begin production of its newly designed underwater life support system.

D3X Total Life Systems LLC, also based in Providence, will manufacture, market and distribute the CCR2000, a computer-controlled closed-circuit diving system that allows underwater excursions for up to eight hours and to depths approaching 2,000 feet.

D3X will produce the unit in partnership with Warwick’s VR Industries, a manufacturer with expertise in computer board assemblies and oceanographic equipment. The first production run is under way, and includes two custom units for Applied Subsea.

The system weighs just 50 pounds, and the companies believe it may be the most innovative and powerful underwater tool since the aqualung was introduced nearly 60 years ago.

The alliance is expected to create dozens of highly-skilled jobs within the Ocean State as the technology becomes of increasing interest to several government agencies, company officials say.
