2021 40 Under Forty Awards
Ashley O’Shea | 36 | Director of Strategic Communications, R.I. Executive Office of Health and Human Services
Where do you see yourself in five years? My daughter will be 11, my son 9, so I see myself balancing a role helping Rhode Islanders while trying to get my kids to their activities on time.
What was your first job? I was an ice cream scooper. I got my working papers on my 14th birthday and started shortly thereafter. I stayed for years, rising to manager before moving on to more professional endeavors. I also asked for my first raise while at that job – a huge learning experience.
What advice would you give your 22-year-old self? Continue to work hard and take chances! You may not know exactly where your career will take you, but be open to the possibilities. Also, remain dedicated to traveling the world as much as you can before settling down.
What moment changed your life more than any other? Becoming a mom! Life-changing, best decision ever.
What is your favorite Rhode Island food or drink? Del’s lemonade!
What does winning this award mean to you? I am so honored to receive this prestigious award. More than 14 years ago, I was reading PBN’s 40 Under Forty section as a young college intern. I saw so many accomplished young professionals and knew I wanted to be like them someday.
THE PROP: Becoming a mom was Ashley O’Shea’s life-changing moment. She is holding a portrait of her family.
