PROVIDENCE — Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse yesterday reached an agreement to stop a Canadian telemarketing company from soliciting Rhode Islanders.
According to the Attorney General’s office, Whitehouse and his Consumer Protection Unit reached the agreement with attorneys for Quebec-based R & R Consultants. The Attorney General’s office said it received nearly two dozen complaints this week alleging that the company, which is not registered to do business in the state, was offering credit card protection for a $385 fee. R & R allegedly informed consumers that their credit card numbers were available on the Internet, and offered to protect consumers’ credit card information, provided consumers give the company their credit card numbers and pay the fee.

According to the Attorney General’s office, there was no evidence that any of the consumers’ credit card numbers were readily available on the Internet, or that R & R was providing any consumer protection. Following the Attorney General’s looking into the matter, the company agreed to stop soliciting Rhode Islanders, and said it will refund consumers here who previously had paid the fee.
