Auto show motors into Providence

The Northeast International Auto Show motored into the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence Thursday, featuring hundreds of new-model cars, trucks, vans and sport/utility vehicles. The latest 2006 models and special concept vehicles will be on display.

The show officially opened to the public Thursday and runs till Sunday. Fork lifts and hundreds of the show’s workers were busy earlier this week setting up overhead highway signs, working traffic lights and thousands of yards of highway carpet to pave the path for visitors in the convention center.

The show offers an up-close look at the future of automotive design and the latest technological advancements. Since it’s a non-selling show, attendees are invited to sit in the driver’s seats, inspect engines and compare legroom on a host of new vehicles without the pressure to buy.

Among the show’s newest models featured are the 2007 Saturn SKY and Chevrolet Tahoe. Cutting-edge concept cars will also be featured. Concepts serve as test beds for design ideas and innovative technologies. Dodge will showcase the Dodge Caliber concept vehicle and a brand-new concept is anticipated from Ford.
