BCBSRI names Donohue managing director of self-insurance team

PROVIDENCE – John Donohue has been named the managing director of the newly created Self-Insured Strategic Solutions business unit at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, effective immediately, the organization announced Monday.

The company said that the unit will offer Rhode Island employers and benefit consultants another option to “introduce and evolve integrated employee health solutions,” said Blue Cross Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Melissa Cummings.

The company said that the unit will focus on “large complex employers administering self-insured strategies across medical, pharmacy, wellness and dental.”

A self-funded health plan entails an employer funding their own health care claims as opposed to purchasing a fully insured plan from an insurance carrier, according to Blue Cross. The plan is still typically administered by an insurance company that oversees network access and engagement tools and resources, however. The type of plan involves employers taking on more responsibility to manage health care costs.

Donohue previously served as the health and benefit leader and market sales leader for Aon Hewitt, and as health and benefit leader for the Bostonian Group, A Marsh Agency.

“I’m excited to add John to our team. His deep experience and demonstrated results position him to effectively partner with customers and design and implement multi-year strategies to better control their healthcare costs,” said Cummings in prepared remarks.
